Insurers in the Smaller Jurisdictions
In Vallejo, California, where 40% of officers have shot people, the city's insurers paid $16 million in claims between 2010 and 2020. This is the kind of thing that you would expect would get insurers' attention and they could press for changes. But it doesn't always work. So instead of addressing the underlying problems leading to these suits, the city of Vallejo decided to pay more in insurance. It's something like a 25% increase in their insurance costs.
