The Impact of the Tsunami on Fertility

Elizabeth Frankenberg is a sociologist and demographer at Duke University. She has been studying the effects of tsunamis in developing countries for 20 years. The 2004 tsunami killed more than 200,000 people on Indonesia's Sumatra island. In communities that were very badly damaged you can actually see gaps in the age structure and the sex composition of the population.
