The Japanese guards actually tried to prevent them from helping these sick men who were clearly no longer fit for action. On being rebuked by another British officer the simple yet powerful words of Jesus came to Gordon, love your enemies. Sacrificial love has transforming power. Friends this is the promise. This is the grace that points forward"
