The language that we have to day is heavily influenced by france as a result of this particular moment in history. A long memory fashions and colours people's views about society. At the norman conquest introduced a far stronger link with rome because of the way in which william reformed the english church. Even more powerfully, at the time of the civil war, you have political theorists who look again, arguly, erroneously, to the anglo saxon as being a time of democracy. The idea of what are the rights at the moment of the conquest goes right on the doomsday book, was still being used in the twentieth century within legal cases.
