The Effect of the Mortgage on Bank Deposits

A lot of bank deposits are still non-interest bearing, and I think that's related to NOW or now accounts. And so much of bank net interest income and profitability comes from people depositing money at zero. But if that money leads, and they have to replace it with bank term funding program from the Fed discount window,. That is now five percent. So that net interest margin just sort of evaporates and can turn negative. Another issue is tying. A lot of the reason you make a loan is, oh, the deposit will stay with me. But if the deposit is leaving, that advantage goes away.
