The Importance of Reason in the Enlightenment
The idea that human beings working together could make real change in their own and other people's condition is an idea we owe to the Enlightenment. The oppression of women, the existence of slavery, feudal hierarchies, and most forms of illness were considered to be natural. And some of them were threatened with death for arguing this. This is not a shitstorm on Twitter. I mean, these are people who stood up for the idea that the Chinese should be taken seriously even though they weren't Christian. That was something that you could be sentenced to death for in early 18th century.
