Scruton says we can derive objective standards of taste by knowing who it is who are good critics. It's kind of reminiscent of some ancient virtue ethic stuff, in which we learn what's virtuous by looking t sage. The question is whether that's simply circular or not. Scruton thinks they're circular, but that's not like a settled thing in the in the secondary literature.
