The Importance of Share Classes in 401k Plans
There are some 401k plans out there. They're very, very few and far between that will allow ETFs on the platform. The issue of a share class is very, very important to the 401k providers because they can structure how the mutual fund companies get paid. An A share is a mutual fund that pays an advisor a 5.75% commission upfront, and then an ongoing fee that includes a 12B one that goes to the firm. B shares became very popular for that very reason.
