The movie has so much symbolism about their relationship, which is a power dynamic shift. Every time they cut away to a mystical creature being sexual in the ocean, it's like, all right, if we know that there's no mermaid, then who was that? The characters like lying to themselves, lying to each other,. Just a lot of intimate scenes that, you know, will cut away abruptly. And that harpoon shot, which is very like, very phallic image, the lighthouse itself being a very phallic symbol.
