Paul Israel is director and general editor of the Thomas Edison papers at Rutgers University. He says Al was born in Milan, Michigan but his parents moved him to Port Huron when he was seven years old. The town's fortunes are on the wane as new railroads springing up across the country take business away from small towns such as Milan," writes Israel.
