Tesla stock had done incredibly well coming out of the pandemic and as a result those Tesla convertible bonds made up more than 10% of the index. But with the equity market selling off, and particularly with Tesla selling off initially before their bonds were converted, that put some downward pressure on convertible bonds. The iShares convertible bond ETF, ICVT, from December 15, 2020, when the convertible bond episode was released through June 12, 2023, returned negative 5.1% annualized. That compares the negative 5.2% to the Vanguard total bond marketETF, BND.
