Is There a Drive at the Beginning?
Kernberg makes affect central, both theoretically and clinically. He argues that the psyche in ferfrod is built up through various vicissitudes of the drives. Libido is what will eventually become of these positive pictures of me and mother, linked by positive affect, that will become libido. And these pictures of us hating each other, or linked by negative, painful affect, that'll become aggression.
