Pinchon is known for his whacky or zany historical novels, which i think function as a kind of a elegies for forgotten moments of crisis ar when history could have turned out differently. Tit furny o say that about the crying on forty nine, because i'd had the same experience, except i found thet er, almost strangely, not so much helpful. But i think it was intended.
