The Sailor's Journey

Melville's novel tells the story of Ishmael, a young man who is driven to go on a whaling voyage. He tries to convince himself that he has no choice but to follow his dreams and take part in the hunt for whales. The author says we can also see him as running away from an encounter with God which he does not like. Melville: "All these things are true all at once"
