The Penitent's Habit
The habit made the penitent nothing obliged converse to live together or even join a society, come fraternity. Umiliana de cerki simply wore a black robe with a white veil, and so she appeared to one of her followers in a vision after her death. In spite of later franciscan attempts to claim her as one of their own great penitents, Franciscans actually painted a franciscan habit over her own. She appears wearing this odd home made habit on an early fourteenth century altarpiece in verona. Pretty nifty, isn't it? Ah, she was very much the do it yourself conversa.
