The Crisis for the Elephant
In 19 80, we were losing between four and five thousand elephants a year that we knew were being killed for their tusks. The only way i thought you could stop it would be strict application of disciplinary measures...and attack the markets. We did burn three million dollars worth of ivory. But no, i think people were genuinely shocked that ivory was causing elephants to become extinct. If you can't get money for an elephant, then you find something else to get money from. And i think we turne the corner then.
