Chat GPT does not understand anything of what it's doing and it doesn't have even what a Psychologist would call a discourse model. The system is merely creating text on the basis of predictions it can make Because of other texts that it is scraped from the web. So for example if you ask chat GPT to cite the sources of The information that it came up with it will do that but it's often wrong.
