I remember you gave a speech in 2012. I think it was the Michael Kirby lecture where the approach you took was to look at all the arguments against marriage equality. And you subsequently found them severely lacking. But for me, that was an indication that the complex system that is Australian society was ready for the change. Look, I think with same-sex marriage, there were people, particularly within the liberal and national parties and some in labor, who were just ferociously opposed to it. They were determined to do everything they could to stop it. It's quite a labyrinthine Byzantine process of how we got there. But from my point of view, I just wanted to get it done
