What Are Signs?

Ferdinand de sasuer says that all signs can be broken down into two primary parts, what he calls the signifier and the signified. In other words, there's nothing about three squiggly lines on a piece of paper necessarily corresponds with the four legged creature frolicking around in pastures all over the world right now. He makes the claim that there is zero necessary connection between the signifiers and the signifying.
