Crimea is a peninsula which belongs to ukraine and lies on the black sea. Between ty and 90 % of people currently living in crimea are russian speakers. It belonged to the union of soviet socialist republics, known as the us s r for short. Tension started building in two thousand and four when pro russia candidate, victor yenukovitch was declared winner of the ukranian presidential election. Separatists took over local institutions with support from the r Russian military. Russia then annexed the peninsula, although the international community widely condemned the referendum.
