Is There a Generation in the Gospel of Matthew?

In matthew 23, jesus tells his disciples that they are the generation who will see this whole thing ultimately break. Some people think he is talking to a later generation of christianity and the church which will carry on for centuries or even millennia. Others say it means an intellectual, theological, people of god generation. Whatever generation is alive when it all starts, that generation will see it all go down including th turn of the son of man.
