Kindred - A Novel About the House and Kindred
Kindred opens with the main character moving into a new house in Los Angeles. And then all of a sudden, she's whisked away to Maryland in the 18th, 19th century. The image of the house basically took over and it helped to account for how buying a house for undocumented migrants and black folks in the US was akin to just returning to slavery.
