Virgil's Inborn Liberty
We have no more power over desiring the desirable than brute animals have over their instinct. But virgil continues, this alone does not determine our choices. Your reason meant to gather every will to that first will, advising at the threshold of assent. This is the principle whereby a man takes merit in a good or evil love gathering fruit and picking out the bran. The moral science handed down by philosophers he has in mind - especially aristotle - helps us to understand this inborn liberty for which actions are freely chosen.
