The Pythagorean Idea of Number

The pythagoreans were thinkers who went so far as to say that things in the physical universe are somehow made of numbers. A particularly important number for them was ten, which, among other things, is the sum of the first four numbers. This tendency lives on until the end of pagan greek philosophy with the tradition we nowadays refer to as neo platonism.
