When you go to your leader, i think the first step is not asking them to do something on your behalf. I like to start from a place of seeking understanding and trying to just get information. The more effort you put into trying to understand what other person cares about, they'll eventually return that in kind - it sounds like you've started doing that. But i would lean into that very heavily. And i might position yourself as i'm asking for their help, especially if they've been at the company for a long time,. You're nodding your head. So those are some of the tactics that i've used, sort of generally, to try and navigate a lot of that.
