In Japan oftentimes even if you don't speak if you say words and try to get a general idea of what you want to do you can ask all the staff or even random people. People will be more than willing to help out travelers so even if they can't speak English all it takes is a simple request like oh sorry I don't speak japanese please help. During conversations if you're talking to someone they'll often give a lot of a lot of affirmative noises to show they're listening.
