The American Urban Landscape in the 18 Forties and Nineties

We'll examine how questions about the national built environment and access to material resources like goods, land and money came ahead in america's growing urban landscapes. In 18 ten, a young woman by the name of margaret van horn dwight set out on a 500 mile journey from connecticut to the ohio territory. And she was the descendant of a prominent line of connecticut theologians and yale college presidents. So with these themes in mind, i thought we could start off to day with a little bit of a comparative story that illuminates some of the ideas that we'll talk about in more detail to day.
