There is no direct evidence whatsoever for an Israelite presence in the Land of Egypt at any point in the day. And how he writes the literature, when he writes the history, affect how we read the theology, right? Those things all sort of hang together. To just read Exodus without a view towards Literature or History can really wind up obscuring the message and not helping it very much.
