The Unspoken Implicit Structures of the American Revolution
A constitution embodies a spirit which is already present and needs to find expression. When he says that all men are created equal, what he's trying to argue for is the right of the colonist's. It's saying you can be self-governing in Britain. We want that right here as well. But if you just take the statement out of its context, all of a sudden it can become a justification for all sorts of mad schemes to equalize across every single dimension of human life. And without those, you get bloody mayhem.
