This chapter examines the tumultuous events leading to Harold's rise to the throne and the subsequent Battle of Hastings, which resulted in his death and William's ascension. It also discusses the establishment of Norman governance, including military and land reforms, and William's commissioning of the Domesday Book to consolidate his power.
The Domesday Book sounds ominous, but it was actually a data gathering project that was compiled in the 11th century at the behest of William the Conqueror.
