Economists have been showing for decades that, in fact, it doesn't make any difference at all. No recent facility appears to have earned anything approaching a reasonable turn on investment. So why do people want to do it at all? Well, status rolls. It's not ice for some people to be from a city that's famous because their sports team won a big prize. This is particularly clear in europe, where people love football so much.
