Tolkien and his wife were engaged for three years before they got married in 1916. Tolkien wrote a lot of letters to his children about their lives, so you get really nice insights into what he was thinking. He expressed admiration for his wife's willingness to marry a man with no job, little money and no prospects except the likelihood of being killed in the Great War. "He sounds like the most tragic character I've ever come from"
