The Causal Road Map
The method is based on an idea that comes out of berkeley called the causal road map. It's really a way of going from a causal question, or scientific question, and going all the way through it to see if you can actually answer it with a certain perimeter. The sixth step is to actually estimate. And whether or not you can actually interpret what you got in step six, as a causal quantity, depends on what you've assumed in the previous steps.
