The Desert Fathers and Mothers
In the fourth century, when the Roman Empire fell into decline and disarray, a very small group of people that we now call the desert fathers and mothers went out. In time, they started what we now called the monastic movement. These were men who believed that to let oneself drift along, passively accepting the tenets and values of what they knew as society was simply a disaster.
