Mandarin was able to basically choose diacritics that looked like the contour of the tone. Another crazy example that Mike is now suddenly excited about is Meng. Spoken by quite a few people around this area in Wisconsin, but for interesting reasons. They add letters that they basically have illegal codic consonants that they just stick on to mean tones.
