The Role of Smell in Smelling
There are some parts of the world. where there are groupings of people who have a much wider range of descriptions of smell than perhaps we tend to have in, let's say, the Western European world. And Indonesia is a place where actually a smell that we think of as Swedish, which is vanilla, is actually perceived as salty. So there must be some sort of culturally defined set of vocabularies around these smells. But I think to a certain extent what history shows us is that smell is incredibly culturally varied and also that our kind of Vocabularies of smell may be not very good at all.
