Kant says we can't think of a equals a without also having to get an a. If there was no necessary connection to the material, the teprinciple itself would have no meaning. He thinks it's important to show that our task essentially is to show that the external world is generated by self consciousness. So he's rejecting that as a candidate here. It's ultimately going to be the synthetic activity of self consciousness.
