The conceit for the whole podcast, a all three seasons, is that we were picking a role in american life that had some volatility to it and asking, like, what's become of it and why? The first season was about referees. The second season was about coaches; they were actually like a list of six to choose from when we got to the season. And i can think of three reasons why we landed on experts. One was, my daughter, who's a junior in college right now, was all over me on the subject because she's gotten, has been, for the last few years, deep into climate change research.
