The Genius of Thomas Sowell

CHAPTER

The Decline of SAT Scores

Sowell says there was a dramatic decline in standardized test scores between the early 1960s and the early 90s. According to Sowell, American students are not just poor at math compared to their peers in other countries, they were also deficient in reasoning itself. He talks about a trend in America toward what he calls psychotherapeutic education. This quest to promote self-esteem has led to a dumbing down of the curricula in schools,. ironically, to a diminution in intellectual skills which in an earlier era would have been the basis for genuine self-esteem.
