Hannibal's Elephants

Hannibal had elephants which were trained to charge the Roman lines and stomp on and squash Roman soldiers. If they stayed in a formation it would be difficult to beat them. They weren't African or Indian elephants, but little ones with big ears. And you could ride them like an Indian elephant. How come I've never heard of these elephants? You are not an elephant expert. Where are these elephants now? They don't exist anymore.
