Jim Boulden: The Lord is appearing to Abraham to give him a sense of security in light of the conflict that he's just had with these Mesopotamian kings. He says shield from here on out in the Bible becomes a regular designation what the Lord is for his people, and we see that particularly in the Psalm where David repeatedly refers to David as his shield. "If the word of the Lord is coming to Abram as it does to Isaiah and Ezekiel and Jeremiah and other prophets in the future, I think we're meant to see this in light of that," writes Boulden.
