The Real Book Is the Most Famous Fake Book in the World, It's Just the Melody in the Chord Progression
The real book is a collection of technically illegal head charts, so that's just the melody in the chord progression. The fake book as we know it is a very, very useful thing for giging musicians. I don't think you need to learn every tune in the real book or even most of them. If you learn a new tune every week or every two weeks, that's 52 or 26 tunes a year,. That's not bad if you're memorizing those and really getting them solid. Do that for five years or something and you'll be well on your way to like knowing every tune that you need to know and having a really strong repertoire.
