Do We Need to Have This, Right?
Zuckerberg's insight was not that you could safely gather and store ungodly amounts of information. It was the willingness to do the equivalent of stockpiling oily rags without worrying about the fires that you started. If you don't care about how things fail, you can build systems that work really well. The fact that we need to amend the code because of new facts and evidence just tells us that it's working. We need a certain amount of friction, but not so much that, that it's impossible.
