The early Christians, wanting to differentiate their shiny new faith from its progenitor, picked Sunday as their holy day of rest. A few centuries later, Islam snatched up Friday as its holy day. But out of all those systems and rhythms, it was the seven-day week that just happened to catch the right cultural slipstream that would propel it into global ubiquity.
