The Jewish week was essentially an endlessly recurring reflection of the creation myth. The early Christians, wanting to differentiate their shiny new faith from its progenitor, picked Sunday as their holy day of rest. A few centuries later, Islam snatched up Friday as its holy day. But out of all those systems and rhythms, it was the seven-day week that just happened to catch the right cultural slipstream that would propel it into global ubiquity.
