Is the Renaissance Getting Closer to Us?
I think that the Renaissance does speak to us more directly, maybe now, than other periods in between. It may be because those works do sit up at that moment where direct communication and a huge artistic ambition were combined. One of the things that was fascinating to me about the Leonardo show, the National Gallery, but also exhibitions like The Sacred Maid Real or The Lake Corravaggio is that there is a kind of spiritual hunger as well. I don't quite know what's going on there, but it's clear that people want it.
