Dedy held her hands over gipsy's ears so as not to offend her befor telling the doctor that she is mentally retarded. The claimed development or delay is so important because it was such an easy way for dedy to take control and explain away why gipsy didn't speak or engage with doctors. In many of the medical records, gipsy is listed as being far, far younger than she was. Her mannerisms and her behavior and her voice is all so childlike.
