Elgar: Enigma Variations

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

CHAPTER

Nimrod by Elgar

The title of the variation Nimrod refers to the fact that Yeager translates to Hunter in German, and Nimrod is a biblical reference to a mighty hunter. Arthur Yeager was Elgar's closest friend and also his publisher. Yeager along with Alice was the main support to Elgar throughout his long periods of depression. After Yeager's death, Elgar said 20 years later, quote, his place has been occupied, but never filled. This variation means a lot to me because it was played at the end of every season of my youth orchestra.
