Senior officials now have access to US dollars at an absurdly low exchange rate. They can then sell on the black market at a massive markup. By reinvesting the same money over and over again, they can become overnight millionaires. Their privileged financial access gives Mugabe's cronies unprecedented spending power. For ordinary citizens though, hyperinflation is totally ruinous. In Zimbabwe, 50 US dollars is enough to buy a brand new Mercedes.
