The Somali language, as it's written today, using Latin script, only became a written language in 1972. So naturally, when the cassette tape came around, it quickly became this vital tool for Somalis to start recording their rich history of poems and songs. While Siaad Barre was in power, it was normal for government institutions to have a band. They recruited the country's best musicians and gave them all the resources they needed to make great music.
