The Dutch army was incapable of stopping the French, who were by then only days away. The government saw little choice but to comply. Prince William V of Orange boarded a ship bound for exile in England. New Batavian Republic would be a staunch ally of France. But with its legitimacy weak and its army and tatters, it was utterly dependent on French support.
